Mois de la Photo 2006: Historical Photomontages and Contemporary Visions

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The 14th edition of Mois de la Photo in Paris, running from late October 2006 to February 2007, was deemed lackluster and overly focused on the theme of photography and the printed page. While the theme allowed for a reflexive look at the medium's history, it resulted in many minor or dispensable exhibitions. Notable historical highlights included the magazine VU (1928-1940) at the MEP, showcasing work by Brassaï, André Kertész, Germaine Krull, Éli Lotar, and Man Ray; John Heartfield's anti-Nazi photomontages at Galerie 1900/2000; Soviet constructivist photomontages by Gustav Klucis, El Lissitzky, and Alexander Rodchenko at Passage de Retz; and Roman Vishniac's documentation of Jewish life in Central Europe before the Holocaust at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme. Contemporary photography was represented by Desiree Nolton at the Institut Néerlandais, Édouard Levé at Galerie Léo Scheer, Catherine Poncin at Galerie Filles du Calvaire, and Donigan Cumming at the Centre Culturel Canadien. The critic lamented the French institutions' reluctance to showcase emerging French artists or international scenes, instead recycling established names like Boubat, Cartier-Bresson, Dieuzaide, Doisneau, Izis, and Ronis.
