Mohammed VI Tower opens as Morocco's tallest building

architecture-design · 2026-05-06

The Mohammed VI Tower, soaring to 250 metres, has officially opened in Morocco, making it the tallest structure in the nation and the third tallest across Africa. This 55-storey, rocket-shaped edifice, designed by Rafael de La-Hoz and Hakim Benjelloun, is situated along the Bou Regreg river, nestled between Rabat and Salé. It houses offices, apartments, exhibition areas, an observatory, and a Waldorf Astoria hotel. Construction commenced in 2017, spearheaded by Othman Benjelloun, a Moroccan billionaire and CEO of Bank of Africa, with development by O Tower, a branch of O Capital Group. The design draws inspiration from a 1969 NASA flight simulation. Notably, the tower's south facade incorporates a photovoltaic double skin for energy efficiency. It surpasses the 210-metre Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca and ranks as Africa's third tallest completed skyscraper, following Algeria's Great Mosque of Algiers Tower and Egypt's Iconic Tower, which is set to eclipse it upon its completion this year.
