Mohammed Kazem's Digital Installation Directions (Merging) Debuts at Art Dubai 2025

Mohammed Kazem's new digital installation Directions (Merging) represents a significant evolution in his Directions series, commissioned by Julius Baer for Art Dubai 2025. The work incorporates animation to create a dynamic, immersive experience where GPS coordinates from global locations merge and dissolve in real time. Dubai's coordinates serve as the central focal point, with others converging into them, challenging notions of fixed borders and geographical permanence. Kazem began collecting GPS coordinates in 1999, documenting locations from his travels worldwide. This digital commission builds on his previous explorations with light, photography, and video, now utilizing moving images and projections to enhance themes of fluidity and transformation. The installation will be housed in the Julius Baer Lounge at Art Dubai from April 18-20, 2025. It aligns with Julius Baer's 'Future Cities' theme, examining how cities like Dubai evolve through cultural convergence and global movement. The work creates a participatory experience that increases audience awareness of shifting geographies and interconnectedness. Kazem's practice has long investigated location, movement, and the passage of time through conceptual dialogues about borders and impermanence.
