Modigliani's London Retrospective at Tate Modern Explores Lesser-Known Aspects
Tate Modern presents a major retrospective on Amedeo Modigliani, covering his career from 1906 to 1919 in Paris. The exhibition is organized chronologically, featuring portraits, drawings, and sculptures shown at the 1912 Salon d'Automne, plus a virtual reconstruction of his last studio. It opens with his 1915 self-portrait as Pierrot and includes a 1919 self-portrait showing his maturity. The show highlights Modigliani's cinematic influences, as seen in the portrait of dealer Paul Guillaume. It emphasizes Paris as a cosmopolitan hub where expatriate artists exchanged ideas. For the first time, twelve nudes are displayed together, revealing the painter's equal relationship with his models, who were paid by dealer Léopold Zborowski. The exhibition runs until April 2, 2018, curated by Nancy Ireson and Simonetta Fraquelli.
