Modigliani and Akhmatova's love story becomes a theatrical play

other · 2026-04-26

A new theatrical play titled 'Tu mi sognavi, io non dormivo' will premiere on January 25-26, 2025 at Sala Teatrale Fabretti in Prato, Italy. Written and directed by Antonio Nobili, the play stars Andrea Carpiceci as Amedeo Modigliani and Virginia Menendez as Anna Akhmatova, with Ilario Crudetti and Daniel De Rossi in supporting roles. The production focuses on the passionate and clandestine love affair between the Italian painter and the Russian poet, which began in Paris around mid-1910 and ended a year later due to Modigliani's illness. He died in 1920 from tubercular meningitis. The play draws from Akhmatova's diaries, published by SE in the volume 'Amedeo Modigliani e altri scritti', where she describes their poverty and Modigliani's resilience. After Prato, the tour will visit Casalgrande, Verona (February 2 at Teatro Fucina Macchiavelli), Ascoli Piceno (February 14-15 at Teatro Palafolli), Forlì, and Brescia (April 12 at Teatro Colonna). The production aims to transport audiences to bohemian early-20th-century Paris through its script and set design.
