Moderna Museet Celebrates 50 Years Since Warhol's First European Show
The Moderna Museet in Stockholm will open 'Warhol 1968' on September 15, 2018, marking exactly 50 years since Andy Warhol's first European retrospective in 1968. That earlier exhibition, held at the same museum, occurred weeks before Valerie Solanas shot Warhol, leaving him clinically dead. The upcoming show features works from the museum's collection including 'Marilyn Monroe in Black and White' (1962), 'Brillo Boxes' (1964), 'Chelsea Girls' (1966), 'Ten-Foot Flowers' (1967), 'Electric Chair' (1967), 'Mao' (1973), and 'Body Builder (Hands on Hip)' (1982–1987), alongside archival photos. The 1968 show drew mixed reviews: critic Ulf Linde wrote in Dagens Nyheter that Warhol's repeated images lose meaning, leaving only superficiality, while Bengt Olvång in Aftonbladet acknowledged a search for truth and disenchantment. The exhibition runs through February 17, 2019.
