Mochu's Technofiction Cinema Blends Indian Experimental Film with Transhistorical Visions
Mochu, an artist from India residing in Delhi and Istanbul, blends elements of cybernetic prosthetics, art history, and the counterculture of the 1960s. His creative output spans films, essays, and lecture performances, noted for their text-heavy style and database cinema approach. Hailing from Kerala and a graduate of the National Institute of Design in Delhi, he ventured into experimental cinema after losing interest in advertising. His 2015 film, A Gathering at the Carnival Shop, delves into the mysterious 1973 disappearance of artist K. Ramanujam. Earlier pieces like Painted Diagram of a Future Voyage (2013) reinterpret colonial aquatints, while Mercury (2016) engages with Mughal miniatures. Recent endeavors include a lecture-performance turned book and Toy Volcano, which reflects on geological deep time. Influenced by Indian filmmakers and science fiction writers, his latest work critiques the strategies of Hindu fundamentalists.
