MOCEAN Creates Branding for NBC's Tokyo 2020 Olympics Coverage
MOCEAN, led by VP and Creative Director Mitch Monson, designed the branding and logo system for NBC Sports' coverage of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. The studio previously collaborated with NBC Sports on the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. For Tokyo 2020, MOCEAN partnered with designer/illustrators Aya Kotake, Burke Miles, Stanley Ng, and Jamie Givens. The identity aims to capture Tokyo's spirit and energy while conveying humanity, competition, and movement. A key challenge was developing distinctive typography that could stand alone, ensuring American audiences recognize the mark as NBC Sports' signature broadcast even without the NBC Peacock, Olympic Rings, or year. The 2020 Games will feature new sports such as surfing.
