MOCAD reopens after year-long renovation with community focus

institutional · 2026-04-29

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) reopened on April 25 after over a year of renovations, just in time for its 20th anniversary. The 22,000-square-foot kunsthalle in a former car dealership now includes a learning space, air conditioning, and a large street-facing window. The main building was renamed after co-founder Julia Reyes Taubman. Co-directors Marie Madison-Patton and Jova Lynne have emphasized community engagement, using Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) to facilitate dialogue rather than didactic interpretation. Current exhibitions include Olayami Dabls's 'Detroit Cosmologies' (until July 12), Carole Harris's 'This Side of the River' (until June 21), and Martha Mysko's 'Retail Therapy' (until June 21). A second renovation phase starting autumn 2026 will add a kitchen, culinary program, sculpture garden, and performance space.
