Moby Dick Exhibition at Palazzo Ducale Genoa Explores Whale Myth Through Contemporary Art

exhibition · 2026-04-26

In 2025, the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa will present 'Moby Dick. La balena,' an extensive exhibition curated by Ilaria Bonacossa and Marina Avia Estrada. This showcase will include approximately 300 artworks that reinterpret Herman Melville's 1851 classic through the lens of contemporary artists such as Emilio Isgrò, Tacita Dean, and Thomas Ruff. The Cappella Dogale will transform into a 'cetacean sanctuary' featuring soundscapes by Alberto Tadiello. Notable pieces include John Akomfrah's 'Vertigo Sea,' a walrus installation by Carsten Höller, and contributions from Pino Pascali and Joan Jonas. The exhibition addresses humanity's connection to the ocean in light of environmental challenges and nods to Genoa's 1992 Colombiadi events. Additionally, a 15-minute VR experience by WAY Experience will immerse visitors in the narrative. Loans will be sourced from both national institutions and local collections.
