MKSK and Olson Kundig Unveil Masterplan for Louisville's Jefferson Memorial Forest

architecture-design · 2026-04-24

In Louisville, Kentucky, the landscape architecture firm MKSK, in partnership with Olson Kundig, has crafted a comprehensive masterplan for the Jefferson Memorial Forest. Established in 1945, this 7,500-acre forest is the largest city-owned forest in the United States, boasting nearly 60 miles of trails and 275 varieties of trees, shrubs, and ferns. Released on April 20 by the Natural Areas Division of Louisville Parks and Recreation, the plan organizes the forest into six unique zones. Notable features include a canopy walk, suspension bridge, learning center, observation tower, event pavilions, and tree-house accommodations designed by Olson Kundig. These lodgings, situated in the Moreman’s Hill area, will provide overnight stays and connect to a tiered biking trail system. Kevin M. Kudo-King, a principal at Olson Kundig, emphasized that the masterplan establishes the park's identity and enhances experiences among the trees. A timeline for construction has yet to be disclosed.
