Mixerpiece App Lets Kids Remix Art History Masterpieces

digital · 2026-05-04

Giuseppe Ragazzini has launched Mixerpiece, an iPad app for €3.49 that lets children create new artworks by combining elements from famous paintings between 1200 and 1900. The app originated from an interactive installation at the Meyer Pediatric Hospital in Florence, funded by the hospital and Fondazione Meyer. Users select eyes, faces, hair, bodies, hands, or backgrounds from works by artists like Millais, Leonardo da Vinci, and Titian. Each selection opens a window with information about the original painting. Shaking the device randomizes the chosen elements with similar ones from the same category. Ragazzini envisions future museum editions and professional use by illustrators. The app has been nominated for the Best Mobile App Awards in the categories Best New Mobile App and Best Mobile App of 2018.
