Miu Miu turns East German aprons into luxury fashion

other · 2026-04-29

Italian luxury label Miu Miu has released dresses resembling 1980s East German kitchen aprons, priced up to €12,000. The collection, inspired by Helga Paris's 1984 photographs of factory workers in the VEB Treffmodelle Berlin, debuted at Paris Fashion Week for summer 2026. Miuccia Prada, a former Italian Communist Party member, aimed to explore female labor roles rather than domesticity. Actress Sandra Hüller, born in East Germany, opened the show in workwear, accompanied by music from Felix Kubin. Stylist Lotta Volkova, who grew up in post-Soviet Russia, also contributed. The aprons, now detached from their original context, are presented as aesthetic objects and summer dresses, sparking debate on women's work. Fast-fashion brands are expected to follow with cheaper versions.
