Mittelfest 2016 Closes in Cividale del Friuli with 50 Events

The 25th edition of Mittelfest concluded on Sunday, July 24, 2016, in Cividale del Friuli, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The festival, founded as a meeting point for live performance languages in the borderlands of Central Europe, featured 50 events over nine days. Artistic director Franco Calabretto programmed a cosmopolitan lineup dedicated to the elements of earth and fire. Performers included Michael Nyman with his concert Music for Films, Carlos Santana, and Simone Cristicchi with a new show blending song and narrative. Dance offerings ranged from the China National Opera to the extreme acrobatics of Teatro del fuoco, Turkish choreographer Azazi with Kenyan dancer Anunag'a, and choreographer Janusz Orlik. Theatre acts included Agrupación Señor Serrano, Stefano Benni with Pecore nere, and Franco Però in Play Strindberg-knock out. A parallel section focused on puppet theatre, featuring marionettes, puppets, and a wooden circus. Talks featured Paolo Mieli and Vittorio Sgarbi. The festival reaffirmed its importance for Friuli Venezia Giulia, attracting many Central European tourists.
