Mitchell-Innes & Nash Now Represents Kenneth Noland Estate, Plans 2011 Exhibition
Kenneth Noland's estate will now be exclusively represented by Mitchell-Innes & Nash. The New York gallery plans to showcase its inaugural solo exhibition of Noland's works in 2011. Noland, who died from kidney cancer in January 2010 at his home in Port Clyde, Maine, was a key figure in the Color Field movement that emerged in the 1960s. His artistic journey included studying under Joseph Albers at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. He was part of a generation following the Abstract Expressionists, alongside artists like Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis. Notable friendships with Bennington College faculty members Anthony Caro, Paul Freeley, and Jules Olitski marked his later years. Critic Clement Greenberg praised Noland's vibrant stripes and chevrons on raw canvas for their clarity. A significant retrospective of his work was held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1977 before moving to the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio. Mitchell-Innes & Nash has two locations: 1018 Madison Avenue and 534 West 26th Street in Chelsea.
