MIT launches Dasha Zhukova Distinguished Visiting Artist program with Pedro Reyes

institutional · 2026-05-05

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has appointed Mexican artist Pedro Reyes as the first participant in its newly established Dasha Zhukova Distinguished Visiting Artist residency program. This initiative, sponsored by Zhukova, the spouse of Roman Abramovich, will commence in fall 2016 with Reyes leading a course titled "The Reverse Engineering of Warfare." Chosen from more than 50 applicants, Reyes was recognized for the social aspects of his work, which confronts challenging issues like drug and arms trafficking in Mexico. His project "Doomocracy," set to debut at Creative Time in New York on October 7, 2016, examines the dynamics between individuals and authority, backed by a Kickstarter campaign. The article also mentions the COLLIDE prize from CERN, which offers €13,000–15,000 and a residency to artists whose creations can motivate scientists. In 2016, CERN welcomed artists such as Antoni Muntadas and Yunchui Kim, the latter receiving the award. Furthermore, in spring 2016, an exhibition focusing on scientific research was jointly held by the Accademia di Brera and Bocconi University in Milan, showcasing works from students and Genoese artist Renata Boero.
