Mistral, the French AI company co-founded by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix, has reached a $14 billion valuation by positioning itself as a non-American, open-weight AI provider. Unlike black-box rivals OpenAI and Anthropic, Mistral offers customizable, downloadable models that can run offline, appealing to governments and corporations wary of Silicon Valley dominance. The company has secured deals with HSBC, Tesco, CMA, and the French government, and counts ASML as a major investor. Despite lagging in performance benchmarks and having only 2% market share in a Menlo Ventures survey, Mistral generated $200 million in revenue in 2025 and projects $80 million monthly by December 2026. Mensch emphasizes independence and open-source over closed-source models, with 40% of revenue from non-European clients.
