Mircea Cantor's Performance at Syracuse's Greek Theatre
Due to the pandemic, the INDA – Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico, which organizes classical shows at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, canceled its 2020 season. Instead, it introduced "Per voci sole" (For Voices Alone), which ran from July 10 to August 30. This initiative showcased contemporary talents such as Nicola Piovani, Tosca, Massimo Popolizio, and others. On August 30, Romanian artist Mircea Cantor (b. 1977, Oradea), recipient of the 2011 Prix Marcel Duchamp, presented a site-specific performance called "The Sound of my Body is the Memory of my Presence," involving Accademia del Dramma Antico students in a symbolic ritual of renewal. Marina Valensise, from Fondazione INDA, noted that the season's redesign was a response to COVID-19 audience restrictions. For the first time in its history, performances were streamed globally in collaboration with TIM. The 2021 season will feature Euripides' "Le Baccanti" and "Ifigenia in Tauride," directed by Carlos Padrissa and Jacopo Gassmann, along with Aristophanes' "Le Nuvole," directed by Antonio Calenda.
