Mirabile Visione: Inferno — Dante's Hell as a Mirror of Modern Evils
Director Matteo Gagliardi, previously known for Fukushima: A Nuclear Story (2016), premiered his documentary Mirabile Visione: Inferno in Florence on February 14, 2023. The film is now screening in major Italian cities. It reinterprets Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy by juxtaposing archival footage and photographs of iconic figures—Totò Riina, Pope Francis, O.J. Simpson, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mao, Mussolini, Marilyn Monroe—with 19th-century illustrations by Francesco Scaramuzza, digitally recolored and animated. The documentary uses a mix of reportage, fiction, and animation to depict each circle of Hell as a representation of contemporary society's ills: capitalist crisis, environmental collapse, and human limitations. The narrative is guided by Professor Argenti (Benedetta Buccellato) and Father Guglielmo (Luigi Diberti). The score, composed by Fabrizio Campanelli and Enrico Goldoni, features a symphony orchestra and sound design by Enrico Ascoli. Gagliardi describes the film as 'a marathon of evil,' aiming to make Dante accessible to students and the general public through a sensual, multimedia approach.
