MINUS SPACE Relocates from Gowanus to Dumbo, Expanding Reductive Art Platform
MINUS SPACE, a gallery dedicated to reductive art, is moving from its 175-square-foot Gowanus location to a larger space in Dumbo. Founded in 2003 as a web-only platform by Matthew Deleget and Rossana Martinez, the gallery transitioned to a physical space in April 2006. The final exhibition at the Gowanus site, "Pointing a Telescope at the Sun," runs from August 6 to September 17, 2011, featuring works by five painters associated with the Hunter College Color School: Doug Ohlson, Robert Swain, Vincent Longo, Sanford Wurmfeld, and Gabriele Evertz. The new gallery at 111 Front Street will open on September 23, 2011, with "Ted Stamm: Paintings," and will operate four days a week instead of two. Deleget and Martinez, who met as students at Pratt Institute in 1994, have built MINUS SPACE into a global community for concept-driven abstraction, hosting exhibitions by artists like Michael Brennan, Linda Francis, Li Trincere, and Mark Dagley. The gallery's archive includes a flat file with works by over 70 artists and has organized traveling shows such as "Escape From New York" to venues in New Zealand and Australia. Deleget emphasizes that the gallery's focus on reductive art is not minimalist but engages with social utility, as seen in shows featuring Josef Albers' album covers, Loren Monk's paintings, and Michelle Grabner's work. The relocation aims to expand the gallery's influence, with Don Voisine noting its role in revitalizing groups like American Abstract Artists.
