Minoru Nomata's Continuum series expands his architectural visions to include ecological pessimism at White Cube
The exhibition titled Continuum by Minoru Nomata is taking place at White Cube Mason's Yard in London from July 10 to August 24. This showcase features his latest paintings, which mark a departure from his previous style. Having started his painting journey in the 1980s, Nomata has recently begun to display his work internationally. The 2023 series, Continuum, transitions from architectural themes to landscapes that depict human structures as fragile. Notable pieces include Continuum-4 (2023) with a waterwheel on a cliff and Continuum-8 (2024) showing thatched awnings alongside a stone sphere, which also appears in Continuum-19 (2024) and Continuum-12 (2024). The series conveys ecological pessimism and draws inspiration from artists like Bruegel and Magritte, contemplating societies with unrealized futures. Meanwhile, Imagine-1 (2018) portrays Tokyo Bay as resembling lifeless coral.
