Minister Sangiuliano proposes MAXXI satellite museum in Brindisi

institutional · 2026-04-27

Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano announced on April 30, 2023, during a visit to Brindisi to support centre-right mayoral candidate Giuseppe Marchionna, that the government is working on a project to open a branch of the MAXXI museum in the Apulian city. The announcement was made in the context of the electoral campaign, with Sangiuliano stating that once elected, Marchionna would come to him to discuss cultural projects, especially contemporary art and the possibility of linking to MAXXI. The minister also pledged to raise the number of first-tier museums from 44 to 60, promoting some museums in the region as economic aggregators. This follows a similar proposal for a MAXXI branch in Messina, Sicily, which would be dedicated to the Mediterranean, and an earlier announcement about acquiring the former Palazzo Inps in Terni for a museum. MAXXI was founded in Rome in 2009 and opened a branch in L'Aquila in 2021.
