Minimalism Survey Expands Beyond Western Canon in Singapore Exhibition
The exhibition titled 'Minimalism: Space. Light. Object.' was showcased at both the National Gallery Singapore and the ArtScience Museum Singapore until 14 April 2019. This event presented over 150 works, representing the first comprehensive exploration of minimalist art in Southeast Asia, with a focus on regional contributions. Notable artists included Ai Weiwei, Anish Kapoor, Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Sol LeWitt, and Tang Da Wu. Highlights included a Mono-ha section and Haegue Yang's 'Sol LeWitt Upside Down' series. Po Po's 'Red Cube' (1986) drew inspiration from Zen Buddhism, while Simryn Gill's 'My Own Private Angkor' (2007–09) captured deserted homes in Malaysia. The exhibition underscored the links between Minimalism and Asian spirituality and showcased works by women artists, including Martin Creed's 'Work no. 1343' (2012) in the café.
