award · 2026-04-20

Minia Biabiany has been named the 2024 recipient of the Moving Image Commission, receiving USD100,000 to produce a new video work. The Han Nefkens Foundation, in partnership with MACBA in Barcelona, MUAC in Mexico City, and The Bass Museum in Miami Beach, awards the grant. Biabiany, born in 1988, focuses on the climate crisis's effects on Guadeloupe and explores exploitation in the Caribbean through video and installation. She stated the funding will enable deeper research blending art, narrative, pedagogy, and ecology within Guadeloupe. A jury led by Han Nefkens commended her poetic integration of colonial histories, ecological crisis, cultural violence, and storytelling. Established in 2009 in Barcelona by Dutch writer and patron Han Nefkens, the foundation supports video art production via global institutional collaborations. The completed work will be donated and exhibited at each partner institution.
