Minerva Cuevas Questions Political Roles and Public Space in Berlin Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Mexican artist Minerva Cuevas presents 'No Room To Play' at daadgalerie in Berlin, running until June 9, 2019. The exhibition features recent works created in Berlin that examine the construction of political roles and the meaning of public space, intersecting childhood imaginaries, freedom, and political activism. Outside the gallery, graphic elements evoke Olympic aesthetics of triumph and competition, but inside, the show includes documentary material on playground development in Europe and North America during the second half of the 20th century, photographs of children and youth climate protests (Fridays for Future), reinterpreted advertising messages aimed at children, and a video of abandoned parks in Berlin. Cuevas was a resident artist in Germany in 2003 through the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD; in 2019, daadgalerie invited her to develop a new project to maintain ties with alumni. The exhibition is curated by Óscar Ardila, who also wrote the accompanying text and took photographs.
