Mindspark Architects' Summer Home nestles into Kerala cardamom plantation
Mindspark Architects, an Indian firm, has finalized the Summer Home, a 360-square-metre dwelling partially embedded in a sloping cardamom plantation in Idukki, Kerala. This residence showcases sliding glass doors that seamlessly link the concrete interiors to the surrounding landscape, highlighted by two wooden viewing decks. A prominent mono-pitched roof, appearing low from the road, elevates to offer sweeping views, which the studio refers to as a 'gradual unfolding.' The design integrates with the slope, embedding sections into the terrain. The upper level features an open living, dining, and kitchen area that extends to a wooden terrace with an ornamental pool mirroring the tree canopy. The steel-framed roof incorporates timber planks, while the interior juxtaposes white-painted walls with board-marked concrete. A concrete stairwell with skylights descends to the lower level, housing bedrooms and an additional living space. To the south, a planted courtyard leads to another terrace with a substantial overhang. Principal architect Prabhul Mathew and associate partner Shahana Salahudeen noted the choice of exposed concrete for its durability and thermal efficiency, enhanced by natural textures.
