Minas Avetisyan: Armenian Painter Who Defied Soviet Realism

artist · 2026-08-18

Minas Avetisyan (1928–1975) was an influential Armenian painter, graphic artist, and stage designer. He was born in Jajur, close to Gyumri, and received his education at the Terlemesjan Art School from 1947 to 1952, followed by the Yerevan Theater Art Institute and the Repin Institute, where he graduated in 1960. His work gained prominence in 1962 during the 'Exhibition of Five' in Yerevan, where he incorporated expressionism and elements of Armenian miniature art. Avetisyan created numerous landscapes, portraits, and twenty murals (1970–1974), many of which were lost in the 1988 earthquake. His stage designs for the ballet 'Gayane' (1974) are regarded as masterpieces. An investigation revealed he was murdered by the KGB in 1975. The Minas Avetisyan Museum in Jajur reopened in 2005 under the direction of his son, Narek.
