Mimosa Echard's 'Dolls' Theater' at Kunsthaus Biel / Centre d'art Bienne

The French artist Mimosa Echard (*1986) presents 'Dolls' Theater' at Kunsthaus Biel / Centre d'art Bienne, transforming the Salle Poma into a conceptual cave. The exhibition, which runs through 2026, draws on diverse mythologies—from prehistoric motifs to New York's Times Square, the Roman goddess Diana, and the Spice Girls. Central to the show is the video 'Tide' (2026), which captures extreme close-ups of advertising screens in Times Square, focusing on the abstract texture of attention rather than recognizable commodities. The series 'Withdrawals' (2026) features fabric patchworks that block electromagnetic waves, showing oxidization traces and negative handprints that evoke prehistoric cave walls. Three sculptures structure the space: 'Diane' (2026) reconstructs a cave Echard decorated at age twelve using shotgun cartridges, pocket mirrors, Spice Girls imagery, and limestone pebbles within a server rack; 'Bébé Marie (after Joseph Cornell)' (2024) reimagines Cornell's Victorian doll as a pop astronaut in a microwave; and 'Matrix' (2026) presents an enlarged straw from a New York sex shop, blurring boundaries between body, object, and image. The exhibition's title references a stalactite formation in New Mexico, and the artist invites viewers to contemplate the shape of myths in contemporary reality.
