MIMOA architecture app launches crowdsourcing campaign

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

MIMOA (Mi Modern Architecture), a global architecture guide app launched in 2007 by a group of Dutch professionals, has initiated a crowdsourcing campaign to redesign the platform. The app offers geo-located descriptions of buildings, squares, parks, and other urban interventions in dozens of cities worldwide, allowing users to plan visits and contribute photos, comments, and favorites. Over eleven years, MIMOA has built a community of over 40,000 architects and enthusiasts and a database of 10,000 buildings across more than 90 countries. Architect and founder Mieke Vullings recently launched the fundraising effort, supported by star architects Jacob van Rijs (co-founder of MVRDV), Nanne de Ru (founding partner of Powerhouse Company), and Julian Weyer (partner of C.F. Møller Architects). The campaign aims to improve geographic coverage and content quality through a redesigned app with easier review, photo, and project submission. Donors receive rewards in four tiers (S, M, L, XL), ranging from name mentions on the website to organized trips to New York and Rotterdam, and even a personalized architecture guide for the maximum donation of €2,000. The new MIMOA, built with user contributions, is expected to launch in January/February 2019.
