Mimmo Paladino's monumental canvas covers Palazzo Baldeschi restoration in Perugia
A 600-square-meter canvas by Mimmo Paladino, titled "Concerto in piazza," now covers the facade of Palazzo Baldeschi on Corso Vannucci in Perugia during an 8-9 month restoration campaign promoted by Fondazione Perugia. The project, directed by architect Carlo Salucci, includes waterproofing, terrace repairs, facade restoration, and wooden door and stone portal restoration. The artwork, a collaboration between Fondazione Perugia, the Comune di Perugia, and the Musei Nazionali dell'Umbria, features Perugian symbols like the griffin, medieval pievi, the trifora of Palazzo dei Priori, and the Fontana Maggiore, surrounded by colorful festoons. Fondazione Perugia president Alcide Casini stated, "We wanted to transform a maintenance need into a cultural gesture." Costantino d'Orazio, director of the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, called it "a concert of all the cultural identities of the region." Paladino, a key Transavanguardia artist, is also featured in the group show "EXTRA – Segni antichi, visioni contemporanee" at Palazzo Baldeschi. A major retrospective will open November 1, 2025, at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria and Rocca Albornoziana in Spoleto, running until January 18, 2026, covering his career from the 1970s conceptual work to recent large-format paintings and films inspired by the Divine Comedy and Don Quixote. In December, Paladino will design artist Christmas lights for Perugia.
