Mimmo Paladino designs Ukrainian flag for Corriere della Sera cover

On March 3, 2022, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera published a cover featuring the Ukrainian flag drawn by Mimmo Paladino, a leading figure of the Transavanguardia movement. The cover responds to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's plea to the European Parliament not to abandon Ukraine amid the Russian invasion. Paladino's design shows yellow and blue colors bleeding off the page, symbolizing the vital energy of an oppressed people. Editor-in-chief Luciano Fontana wrote an editorial stating, "We are all Ukrainians: their flag, designed for Corriere by Mimmo Paladino, is our flag." The cover also aligns with international media responses: Time magazine commissioned illustrator Neil Jamieson for its March 14–21 issue featuring Zelensky's quote in Cyrillic, and Japanese-born artist Sho Shibuya painted Ukrainian flag colors on New York Times covers, posting them with the caption "STOP WAR!".
