Mimmo Jodice's 'Mediterraneo' at Palazzo Lanfranchi, Matera

Mimmo Jodice's 'Mediterraneo' exhibition opened at Palazzo Lanfranchi in Matera from July 6 to November 8, 2026. Curated by Carlo Sala, it is the first major institutional show since Jodice's death. The exhibition features 83 works, including vintage silver prints and recent pieces, spanning over thirty years of the artist's research. Jodice's photographs transform archaeology into a contemporary practice, avoiding documentary approaches. The series, begun in the late 1980s, reimagines the Mediterranean as a mental space rather than a geographic one, with images from Campania, Greece, Turkey, Libya, Tunisia, and Jordan. The show is part of the 'Matera e Tétouan Capitali Mediterranee della Cultura e del Dialogo 2026' program, emphasizing the Mediterranean as a space of relation. Jodice's darkroom technique, with deep blacks and luminous openings, creates a perceptual space beyond mere recording. The exhibition highlights Jodice's practice of slowness and opacity in an age of digital image saturation.
