Mimmo Jodice's 58-Year Career Documented in New Electa Monograph

A comprehensive monograph on Italian photographer Mimmo Jodice, titled 'Mimmo Jodice attesa / dal 1960,' has been published by Electa in collaboration with the Madre museum in Naples. The nearly 700-page volume covers 58 years of Jodice's work, from 1960 to 2018, and includes texts by Salvatore Settis, Andrea Viliani, Nicola Spinosa, and Ester Coen. The book is structured into seven chapters, each focusing on a different phase of his research: 'Opere di ricerca dal 1960,' 'Teatralità quotidiana a Napoli,' 'Città e nature,' 'Archeologie e mediterranei,' 'Eden,' 'Transiti,' and 'Attese.' Each chapter includes photographs, documents, and a selected bibliography. Jodice, born in Naples in 1934, is one of Italy's most important postwar photographers and has exhibited at the Louvre in Paris. In an interview with Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jodice describes his work as 'conceptual photographic research,' rejecting the dictionary definition of photography as mere reproduction of reality. He emphasizes that technique and concept coincide in his practice, noting that he has always printed his own photos. Jodice cites Bill Brandt, Germaine Krull, and the Russian avant-garde as influences.
