Mimmo Jodice Retrospective at Gallerie d'Italia, Turin: Interview with Curator Roberto Koch

Roberto Koch, curator of the retrospective 'Mimmo Jodice. Senza tempo' at Gallerie d'Italia in Turin, discusses the exhibition as the second chapter of a cycle dedicated to 'La Grande Fotografia Italiana' initiated by the museum in 2022 with Lisetta Carmi. Jodice, born in Naples in 1934, is described as a visionary photographer whose work transcends documentary contingency to create poetic, timeless visions. Koch emphasizes Jodice's lifelong passion for photography, his belief that every photograph he made he would remake to relive the happiness of the moment, and his mastery of the darkroom process. The exhibition includes a series on nature commissioned by Intesa Sanpaolo, begun in 1980, which Jodice says reflects his discomfort with daily life and a sense of hopelessness, resulting in suspended, metaphysical atmospheres. The public program #INSIDE runs from October to January on Wednesday evenings, featuring speakers such as critic Andrea Viliani (director of Museo delle Civiltà, Rome), filmmaker Mario Martone (who recently made a documentary on Jodice), author Isabella Pedicini (biographer of Jodice), and photography historian Roberta Valtorta.
