Milo Manara retrospective opens at Bologna's Palazzo Pallavicini
Palazzo Pallavicini, an 18th-century residence in central Bologna, inaugurates its exhibition program with a major Milo Manara retrospective. The show, titled 'Nel segno di Manara. Antologica di Milo Manara' and curated by Claudio Curcio, features 130 works spanning the artist's career, including comics, illustrations for press, cinema, and advertising. Manara, born in Luson, Bolzano in 1945, is renowned for his erotic style and collaborations with Federico Fellini, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Hugo Pratt, and others. The exhibition is divided into seven sections, highlighting his 1980s works 'Il Gioco' and 'Il Profumo dell'Invisibile' featuring his alter ego Giuseppe Bergman, his collaborations with Pratt, and 'I Borgia' with Jodorowsky. Recent illustrations for French magazine LUI and pages from the second volume on Caravaggio (not yet published) are also on display. Manara abandoned painting in 1968 in protest against the commodification of art, turning to comics as a more popular medium. He debuted in 1969 with erotic-crime stories for the Genius series. His breakthrough came in the 1980s, partly through his work with Fellini on 'Viaggio a Tulum' for Corto Maltese.
