Milo Manara designs sets and costumes for Mozart opera at Teatro Pergolesi

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Milo Manara, the 78-year-old comic artist known for erotic illustrations, will make his debut as a set and costume designer for Mozart's Così fan tutte at the Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi, Italy. The production is part of the theater's 56th opera season, scheduled for October 20 and 22, 2023. Directed by Stefano Vizioli, with the FORM – Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana conducted by Aldo Sisillo, the opera features Manara's large-format illustrations inspired by Zeus's metamorphoses, nymphs, and satirs. The pastel color palette references 18th-century painting trends, echoing the Galleria di Palazzo Pianetti. From October 13 to 29, Manara's original sketches will be exhibited at Palazzo Pianetti. The opera, last of Mozart's Da Ponte trilogy, premiered in 1790 at Vienna's Burgtheater.
