Milan's Palazzine Liberty assigned to REDO SGR, ex-Macao space to become cultural hub

The Municipality of Milan has assigned the Palazzine Liberty complex in Viale Molise to REDO SGR SpA, led by Fabio Carlozzo, for redevelopment. The complex, built in the late 1930s as part of the former public slaughterhouse, spans about 12,990 sqm in the Porta Vittoria/Calvairate district (Municipio 4). One of the six buildings (civic 68) was occupied from 2012 to 2021 by the Macao collective, which fought against real estate speculation and gentrification. After eviction, the space remained unused until Alcova secured it for the 2025 Fuorisalone, sparking controversy that led Alcova to relocate nearby. The tender was evaluated on November 24, 2025, with a surface right of 90 years for a fee of about €12.86 million. The buildings will be repurposed for offices, retail, education, and training. However, building number 4 (civic 68) will have a reduced 6-year surface right and be reserved for socio-cultural and recreational services of public interest, managed through a public procedure. The city specifies it must host cultural production, artistic activities, social aggregation, education, and non-profit initiatives, with free access except for specific events. This does not signal a return to self-managed culture but a space less commercially driven. Former Macao members can form an association and compete in the public tender.
