Milan's New Bars and Restaurants Define a Contemporary Urban Aesthetic

A wave of new bars and restaurants in Milan is establishing a distinct local aesthetic, blending old-school charm with contemporary design. Fiorin Fiorello, designed by Parasite 2.0, features raw stainless steel, briarwood walls, and a DJ booth for dancing from Thursday to Saturday. Its American sommelier Louis Turano manages the bar, where a color-changing light box shifts from yellow to red nightly. Co-founder Luca Fiore describes it as neither a traditional enoteca nor a listening bar, but a hybrid space for music and wine. Similarly, Kiwon, a Korean restaurant with interiors by Oooh Studio, emphasizes conviviality with New York-style bar seating facing an open kitchen. Chef Ha Neul Ko, whose family runs a 40-year-old Korean restaurant, collaborates with owners Carmine Colucci and Emanuele Romanelli on dishes like tteokbokki and fried chicken. Balay, founded by Ray Ibarra, offers global Filipino-inspired small plates in an intimate setting with exposed walls and a Bowers & Wilkins stereo. Located near Spazio Maiocchi, it hosts Monocle's daytime pop-up café during Milan Design Week. Other notable venues include Sandì, Bar Nico, Bar Sensa, Mogo, San, Silvano Vini e Cibi al Banco, and Rito. Luca Marullo of Parasite 2.0 notes that patrons now spend entire evenings in such spaces, moving beyond traditional aperitivo and club routines. This shift reflects Milan's evolving nightlife, possibly influenced by new residents or catching up to cities like London and Paris.
