Milan's Museo del Novecento to Double in Size with €27M Expansion
The Museo del Novecento in Milan will expand into the adjacent Secondo Arengario, doubling its exhibition space. The project, approved by the city council, has a budget of €27 million and includes a suspended walkway connecting the two buildings. The expansion will focus on contemporary art, extending the museum's narrative from the 20th century to the present. The design competition was won in July 2021 by a team led by architect Sonia Calzoni. The project is supported by the Fondazione Pasquinelli and philanthropist Giuseppina Antognini, who donated works and funds. Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2024, with completion projected for 2027-2028. The museum, inaugurated on December 6, 2010, occupies one of the two Arengario towers designed by architects Griffini, Magistretti, Muzio, and Portaluppi during the Fascist era, with facade reliefs by Arturo Martini and interior renovation by Italo Rota.
