Milan's Museo del Novecento opens world's most important Futurism collection

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Museo del Novecento in Milan has unveiled the Gianni Mattioli Collection within its newly reinstalled Galleria del Futurismo, creating what the city's culture councilor Tommaso Sacchi calls the most complete Futurism collection in the world. The 26 works by early 20th-century Italian artists, including Umberto Boccioni, Mario Sironi, Amedeo Modigliani, Carlo Carrà, and Giorgio Morandi, are on long-term loan from Giacomo Rossi, Mattioli's grandson. The collection is displayed in dialogue with the museum's permanent masterpieces, such as Boccioni's "Unique Forms of Continuity in Space," paired with his "Dynamism of a Cyclist" and "Dynamism of a Human Body" from the Mattioli Collection. Other highlights include Boccioni's "Materia," "Crepuscolo," and the sketch for "The City Rises"; Carrà's "Interventionist Demonstration"; Severini's "La Chahuteuse" and "Blue Dancer"; Balla's "Mercury Passing Before the Sun"; Modigliani's portraits of Paul Guillaume and Franck Haviland; and Sironi's "Composition with Propeller" and "The White Horse." A monographic room dedicated to Morandi now includes six canvases from the Mattioli Collection. The display precedes the museum's expansion into the Secondo Arengario, featuring a suspended walkway over Piazza Duomo.
