Milan's Luxury Street Via della Spiga Becomes Open-Air Gallery
Starting April 20, 2021, the project 'Trasformazione' by ATO Art Takes Over transforms vacant shops at Via della Spiga 48 in Milan into exhibition spaces. Project manager Nicole Saikalis coordinated collaboration between Galleria Raffaella Cortese, Galleria Massimo Minini, and Galleria Francesca Minini. The initiative aims to make shop windows again a means of vision, bringing art directly to the street. Works by Monica Bonvicini and Ariel Schlesinger are featured. Bonvicini, born in Venice and based in Berlin, presents 'From East to West (Bellemont)' (2020) addressing global warming, alongside 'Satisfy Me' (2017), 'Bent in Shape' (2017), 'Belts Ball' (2015), and 'Come on Cowboy' (2020). Schlesinger, born in Jerusalem and based in Berlin, shows three sculptures from the series 'Nice to meet you' (2019) made from broken mirrors, and burned carpets. Concurrently, from April 28, Galleria Lia Rumma presents Marina Abramović's 'The Communicator' (2012) and 'Ecstasy II' (2012) at Via della Spiga 31. Abramović's wax head casts pierced with malachite and quartz on glass pedestals symbolize transformation and reappropriation of empty spaces. The installation includes the photographic work 'Ecstasy III' exploring emptiness and balance.
