Milan's former Karma nightclub to become cultural center

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Municipality of Milan has issued a tender for the transformation of the former Karma nightclub, a 3,000-square-meter pseudo-tourist village with buildings resembling a hamlet (also known as Borgo del Tempo Perso), which operated as a dance hall until 2017. The permit expired, the owner left, and legal disputes have concluded, allowing the city to repurpose the site. Located at the boundary between the Corvetto district and the Valle della Vettabbia and Chiaravalle countryside, the area is part of the Porto di Mare zone, once notorious for the Rogoredo drug grove but now undergoing rapid regeneration. The municipality will not allow the Karma to return as a nightclub; instead, it seeks proposals for cultural or sports spaces, or a combination of both, possibly incorporating peri-urban agriculture given its proximity to the Parco Agricolo Sud. Urban planning councilor Pierfrancesco Maran stated: 'Here we expect predominantly social and sports activities, maybe an opportunity for a new swimming pool or to give space to art and culture.' He noted the quadrant is changing profoundly, with the Porto di Mare park being revived in collaboration with Italia Nostra, the Corvetto new municipal headquarters, the Rogoredo Olympic districts with the Conservatory campus, and the large Scalo Romana project. The tender is open until June 10, seeking bold, visionary operators.
