Milan's First Sports Photography Museum Opens at Spazio Tadini
Milan's cultural landscape gains a new specialized venue with the opening of the Sport Photography Museum (SPM) on October 21, 2021. Housed in the Casa Museo Spazio Tadini, the former studio of artist and writer Emilio Tadini, the museum is the first in Italy exclusively dedicated to authorial sports photography. Founded by curator and choreographer Federicapaola Capecchi and internationally renowned sports photographer Alessandro Trovati (Canon Ambassador since 2017), with co-founders Luigi Sordi and Beatrice Ravelli, SPM aims to elevate sports photography beyond documentation to cultural dissemination, emphasizing its artistic, social, and ethical dimensions. The museum's permanent exhibition features Trovati's work, while a solo show of American sports photographer Robert Riger opens on November 25, 2021—his first in Italy—organized with his estate and trustee Dawn Aberg. A full Italian retrospective of Riger follows in spring 2022. SPM also prioritizes education, offering workshops on photographic technique and sports photography, masterclasses, and events with sportswear brands. A crowdfunding campaign runs until October 22, 2021. The initiative leverages Milan's role as a host for major sports events, particularly the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
