architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Milan Ingegneria has secured the Invitalia contract for the new arena floor at the Colosseum in Rome, with funding of €18.5 million from Italy's Grandi Progetti Beni Culturali. A committee that included Salvatore Acampora and Giuseppe Scarpelli selected the firm. Collaborating with architect Fabio Fumagalli, the design aims to recreate the former wooden floor at the Flavian level, utilizing eco-friendly Accoya wood. The project incorporates movable panels for natural illumination, 24 mechanical ventilation units for air circulation, and a system for collecting rainwater. The area will increase from 650 to 3,000 square meters. Construction is anticipated to take 240 days, beginning in late 2021 or early 2022, and finishing in 2023. Minister Dario Franceschini described it as a major undertaking for Italy.
