Milan exhibition pays tribute to Hayao Miyazaki with alternative movie posters
Soggettiva Gallery in Milan opens 'Il mio vicino Miyazaki e l'Oriente', a group show celebrating Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, through alternative movie posters reinterpreted by various artists. Curated by gallery founders Alberto Bozzoli and Raoul Simoni, the exhibition runs from January 3 to February 11, 2024. It features works inspired by iconic films such as 'Spirited Away' (over $400 million worldwide), 'Ponyo on the Cliff', 'Princess Mononoke' (first released in Japan in 1997), 'Howl's Moving Castle', and 'My Neighbor Totoro' (1988). Artists include Mainger (Belgium), Bailey Race (US architect), Chris Koeler, Zi Xu, Dan Grissom, Jordan Bolton, and Le Nevralgie Costanti. The show coincides with the Italian release of Miyazaki's new film 'The Boy and the Heron' (distributed by Lucky Red, in Italian theaters from January 1, 2024), which had a record-breaking debut in Japan with over ¥2 billion and 1.3 million viewers in four days despite no advertising campaign. The film is set in Japan during WWII and follows a boy named Mahito whose mother died in a fire.
