Milan Design Week 2026: Fractured Zeitgeist, Intellectual Turn, and Collectable Design Rise

festival-fair · 2026-04-24

Milan Design Week 2026 closed with no single dominant aesthetic, reflecting a fractured zeitgeist. For the first time since the pandemic, car brands, hospitality groups, and fashion houses retreated amid tightening budgets due to economic and geopolitical volatility. The week's most popular exhibitions offered intellectual narratives: the brutalist Torre Velasca hosted showcases on Polish modernism and Jorge Zalszupin, organized by the Visteria Foundation; Triennale Milano presented three exhibitions on Fredericia, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, and the Eames House (now developed by Kettal). Fashion houses engaged in idea-driven programming: Jil Sander's creative director Simone Bellotti launched the Reference Library with 60 titles chosen by Lykke Li and Sofia Coppola; Miu Miu's book club explored desire through Annie Ernaux and Ama Ata Aidoo; Prada Frames examined image-making. The rise of collectable design was evident, with Salone del Mobile introducing Salone Raritas, a new section for collectable works. The week saw parties in church cloisters and Porta Venezia, with banners reading "Design is act."
