Mikola Ridnyi’s Blind Spot at Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia

festival-fair · 2026-05-20

The Fotografia Europea festival in Reggio Emilia, titled Fantasmi del quotidiano (Ghosts of the Everyday), features Ukrainian artist Mikola Ridnyi’s ongoing series Blind Spot (2014–). The work uses visual metaphors of retinal blind spots and scotomas to depict war-torn landscapes: buildings gutted by flames, rubble, and encroaching darkness. Ridnyi’s photographs show black shadows expanding from the edges or center of the frame, leaving only fragments of reality visible. The series makes palpable the gradual erasure of everyday life under conflict.
