Mikis Theodorakis designs label for Nittardi Chianti Classico 2017

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Nittardi, a winery in Tuscany, has unveiled a new artist label for its 2017 Casanuova di Nittardi Vigna Doghessa Chianti Classico, crafted by Greek artist and composer Mikis Theodorakis (born Chios, 1925). Since 1981, Stefania Canali, an art historian, and Peter Femfert, a gallerist, have invited a different artist annually to design the label and the tissue paper for the bottle. Theodorakis's label incorporates musical notes from a ballad set against a geometric background, while the tissue paper showcases a vibrant blue depiction of a starry sky, symbolizing his dedication to freedom and his diverse roles as a composer, musician, politician, and philosopher. Léon Femfert, who has overseen the estate since 2013, praised Theodorakis's work, noting their mutual political ideals against totalitarianism. Furthermore, Nittardi plans to showcase all 37 artist labels from 1981 to 2019 at Milan's Fondazione Marconi in April 2020, including pieces by notable artists such as Yoko Ono, Tomi Ungerer, and Eduardo Arroyo.
