Mike Leigh Says New Film Likely His Last

British filmmaker Mike Leigh, 83, has stated that his upcoming feature "Tender Loving Care" will likely be his final film. Speaking at a Golden Globes-hosted London roundtable, Leigh cited his myositis diagnosis, which has severely affected his mobility, as the primary reason. He described making another film as "very difficult" and "not going to be possible." The film, produced by Georgina Lowe, faced financing challenges due to Leigh's improvisational process, which lacks a conventional script. Leigh emphasized the increasing difficulty of securing support for independent films without compromising creative control. "Tender Loving Care" stars Marion Bailey, Paul Jesson, and Kate O'Flynn, with Bailey noting the method "hasn't fundamentally altered" since their first collaboration in 1981. The film is set for a December 4 release from Bleecker Street, following its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and a likely Telluride bow.
