Mike Kelley's Legacy and Upcoming Retrospective Following His Death at 57

artist · 2026-04-22

The art community was left reeling after the apparent suicide of Mike Kelley, 57. Hailing from Wayne, Michigan, Kelley studied at CalArts in the late 1970s, mentored by John Baldessari and Laurie Anderson. His installations, such as More Love Hours Than Can Ever Be Repaid (1987), challenged conventional family structures. In the late 1970s, he teamed up with Tony Oursler for the project Destroy All Monsters, which gained popularity in the 1990s. The Whitney Museum hosted his first retrospective, Mike Kelley: Catholic Tastes, in 1993. He created Day is Done (2005) for Gagosian Gallery. A memorial shrine emerged in Highland Park, and a tribute concert took place on February 7. Kelley's work reflected punk culture and postmodernism.
